Dymak Global: 2020 Recycled Plastic
Background
Dymak is a global trading company specializing in upgrades for plants and flowers. With over 19 years of experience in the industry, they are able to offer and customize nearly any material for their customers.
The Opportunity
Dymak's business model is to provide full customization on all the plant pots and upgrades that they offer, providing concepts and then physical samples that can be resized and redesigned for each individual client. They deliver all orders directly to the customer, reducing costs in shipping and stock. Ceramic, metal, and even glass are fairly easy to sample and customize, but plastic requires expensive molds and high lead times. So far this had dissuaded Dymak from pursuing recycled plastic, but an opportunity in the market drove demand and therefore, innovation forward.
In 2017 the US team was tasked to create a strategy to showcase a collection of plastic products without making samples.
The Solution
Using 3D modeling and rendering software, we created a catalog of products to showcase multiple design capabilities without opening a single mold. Under the direction of the US marketing manager, I worked with an industrial designer to create the first Recycled Plastic Catalog. In 2018 and '19, I lead the design and development of the second and third issues, pushing the overall design and structure further to better communicate Dymak’s unique process.
Within the catalog, we showcased planters, bowls, and hanging baskets, highlighting certain products with information on the design process. All designs were created within Rhino, ZBrush, Keyshot, and Photoshop.
One Step Further
In 2019 I lead the design and art direction for a strong supplement to our plastic catalogues: the Plastic Toolkit. We developed the toolkit to illustrate the design process and displayed a collection of shapes, textures, and colors, enabling customers to easily design their own custom planters.
